When prohibition ended in 1933, the federal government shied away from standardizing alcohol permits; instead, each state was free to determine their own licensing requirements. This resulted in 50 different alcohol regulations that vary state by state in their specific allowances and penalties. For example, direct shipping into Utah is a felony offense resulting in significant jail time, while Louisiana allows direct shipments of 12 cases per person, per year.
